Instructional Design Model:

The New World Kirkpatrick Model

After designing a course you'll want to show how effective your training program is, especially when presenting the program to the stakeholders. Evaluation of your training program can improve it by maximizing transfer of learning to behaviors and demonstrating the value of training to the organization you're designing for. Transfer of learning behavior means that content from your training gets implemented on the job. You can determine the effectiveness of a training program by checking that on-the-job performance has increased. You'll want to demonstrate to stakeholders that their resources have been put to good use by gathering data related to effective training. For more information, visit kirkpatrickpartners.com.

There are four levels to The New World Kirkpatrick Model. First, you begin with level 4:

Level 4: Results

  • To what degree targeted outcomes occur as a result of the learning event(s) and subsequent reinforcement.

  • What does the organization exist to do/ deliver/ contribute? By definition it is some combination of the organizational purpose and mission.

Level 3: Behavior

  • To what degree participants apply what they learned during the training when they are back on the job.

  • "Required drivers" are processes and systems that reinforce, monitor, encourage and reward performance of critical behaviors job aids, coaching, work review, pay-for-performance systems and recognition for a job well done.

  • Active execution and monitoring of required drivers is the biggest indicator of program success for any initiative

Level 2: Learning

  • To what degree participants acquire the intended knowledge, skills and attitudes based on their participation in the learning event(s)

  • Components to learning include; knowledge and skill (I know it and can show you), attitude (I believe that it will be worthwhile to implement what is learned), confidence (I can do this), and commitment (I will apply what I learned).

Level 1: Reaction

  • To what degree participants react favorably to the learning event(s), how much they engaged with and applied the material.

Each of these levels will provide you with data about the effectiveness of your training program. Providing solid data that demonstrates the value of the training to the organization will be extremely valuable to the stakeholders. The New World Kirkpatrick Model can be applied to any course whether it's in the education or business field.
